When Git is the better choice

If you write code yourself, work with other people, or need branches and a shared history, use Git. GitHub Desktop removes the terminal for the everyday steps. Fate Tracker does not replace it and never touches a repository; many people run both, with Git for collaboration and build memory for the reasons, the claim check and the verified copy.

When editor checkpoints or cloud backup are the better choice

If your whole project lives inside Lovable or Replit, their built-in version history is the right undo, because there is no local folder for anything else to protect. Cursor's checkpoints are the fastest way to step back within one session. Cloud backup is the right answer for the rest of your computer, including a failed drive, which is outside what Fate Tracker covers. Fate Tracker is for a game project that lives as files on your Windows PC and is edited by an AI tool you want to keep honest.

When an AI memory layer or VibeLign is the better choice

If you are building an AI product that must remember users across conversations, Mem0, MemoryLake, Supermemory or Zep are the tools for that job; they are developer infrastructure, not project records. If you want a free, command-line checkpoint tool with an undo button and do not need engine awareness, claim checking or verified recovery, VibeLign is worth a look.
